MARETEC-IST

IST (https://tecnico.ulisboa.pt/en/) is the leading engineering, science and technology school in Portugal, integrating competences from all fields of engineering and fundamental sciences, creating a unique multidisciplinary scientific environment. Its mission is to provide top quality higher education as well as developing RD&I activities that meet the highest international standards.

MARETEC is a Research Centre of IST for Marine, Environment and Technology (http://www.maretec.org/), having modelling of marine and land systems as the main activities, especially to address water environmental problems and management challenges. MARETEC has more than 20 years of experience in the development and application of numerical models to coastal and ocean areas and 10 years of experience in land and riparian areas. It is also strongly involved with different monitoring programs for coastal areas concerning water quality and primary production. The MOHID system – a public domain code with users worldwide – is an integrated modeling system developed by MARETEC.

Recently, MARETEC developed a broader remit, addressing in a balanced way both the marine and terrestrial environments, with an approach strongly based on quantitative tools, namely process based models, integrating the Natural Sciences with Economics.
